Timothy Kerner, President of The Millennium Group, was the featured Keynote Speaker at the 2023 Mailcom conference and exhibition in Atlantic City, NJ. On Wednesday, October 4, Timothy opened his speaking engagement with a brief comparison of how his years of military training and service have been significant in his journey to becoming a proven leader.

Timothy states that leadership needs to be a curriculum, not just an assumption that a future leader has the knack to make it. He opened with a floor discussion on examples of what a shining moment was, a highlight in a life well-lived, leading into how the essence of team building is learning about someone’s special moment and connecting on a more personal level.

Trust, positivity and enthusiasm were also key points of discussion when speaking of developing purposeful, driven leaders.  Offering a need for enthusiasm into the mix, leaders embrace a positive approach, have an open mindset, and connect with emotional intelligence, thus garnering loyalty from the team.

“Organizational resiliency is a collective purpose, the positive connection that is made, and I believe that true purposeful leaders have the utmost in a moral compass to make decisions that will have a positive impact on an organization, and enthusiasm…it’s contagious,” states Timothy.

He revisited his military training once again, discussing the Army definitions of purpose direction and motivation, reminding us all that purposeful leaders always have the opportunity to be both a role model, as well as a mentor to train and develop future purposeful leaders.

Leaders don’t just hear what you say, but they truly listen, and they respond, encouraging creativity and trust.  Accountability also came into play, as styles of leadership produce different results.

Wrapping up the session, Timothy featured stories from the 2-Star Admiral William H. Macraven. His commencement speech to the University of Texas in 20214 made such an impact on Timothy that his book is earmarked and weather worn.  But he encouraged all leaders to read the book, change a life…and ‘make your bed every morning.”
